Due to Covid and school work traveling around Italy is a bit more challenging than I thought. Sanne (my roomie) and I spontaneous decided to spend the weekend in Venice before major Covid travel restrictions were put into place. Best decision ever!!

We left on a Saturday morning and took took the train from Santa Maria Novella station to Santa Lucia. We arrived into Venice at about 1pm and checked into our Airbnb. The first thing we did was, of course a gondola ride! After, we visited the Fondazione Querini Stampalia , the was designed by the architect Carlos Scarpa and recommend for all interior design/ architecture students. We spent the rest of the afternoon exploring the cannels and trying to find the best and "most inexpensive" prosecco.. which was a success! In the evening we wanted to find a cozy little place in the Dorsoduro District for dinner that was not on the main touristic paths. The next morning I got a cappuccino and we walked around! We walked along the water to the Bridge of Sighs ( great photo opportunity!! )

MY PERSONAL VENICE GUIDE + MUST DO'S

1. GONDOLA RIDE

This is probably a given, but it's worth it!! Even though it can seem expensive, seeing the city from the water is a completely different experience! I suggest snapping a few photos at the beginning and enjoy the rest of the time.. because the time goes by so fast!

2. PICK A MUESUM

For being a small city, there are about 100 museums to chose from! I suggest picking something that interest you and learn something new on vacation! My favorite museum is the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. It's along the main cannel and contains modern art pieces and stunning views!

3. YOU NEED TO TRY A BELLIN

The Bellini originated in Venice and is a cocktail made from prosecco and peach purée (sooo good ) Compared to Florence, I found alcohol in general to be much cheaper in Venice. If you walk away from major touristic areas such as St. Mark's Square, you will find a glass of prosecco for €2!

4. ST. MARK'S SQUARE + DOGE'S PALACE

I know this may also be a given, but it really is a must see! My favorite spot in Venice is along the water on the Doge's Palace. The view overlooking to the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute (especially during sunset) is one of the most amazing things I have even seen!

5. PHOTO SPOTS

Yes the photo spots!! In no particular order these are my favorite spots to stop and take a quick pic.

  • The T Fondaco Rooftop Terrace has an amazing view of the city.

  • The Bridge of Sighs is such a beautiful spot and if you time it right with the sun you will have the best lighting!

  • The gondolas are a great way to take cool water pictures. It can be a little tricky to get a good photo of yourself in the boat though, because it's quite small. I also recommend after your ride, take a photo on the dock close to the water.

  • In front of the Rialto Bridge! The Rialto is the largest bridge that goes over the grand canal and is a must see. It's a very crowded spot, but if you walk on the dock you can get most people out of the photo.

  • Lastly, Venice is greatly known for its many little bridges and canals. Have fun getting lost in them and I'm you will find the cutest locations.

Much Love,

Gabriella
